Session Snapshot

A New Era of Opportunity in Appalachia- Join Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Federal Co-Chair Gayle Manchin for a conversation about ARC’s 5-year strategic plan and funding opportunities in the region. With a focus on workforce development and community capacity building, learn how ARC’s strategic plan will enhance collaboration with partners across state and county lines to usher in a new era of economic opportunity for Appalachia.

Mindful Public Management- Transform your personal life, and your community, through mindfulness practices aimed specifically at those in the field of professional local government management. This interactive workshop, led by a County Administrator, will feature mindfulness strategies, contemplative thought practices, present moment living techniques, clearing of the mind and other focus and mental well-being measures and drawing these practices to life as a public administrator. A fun and engaging, mental health-oriented, practical self-care program timed to coincide with managers dealing with enhanced levels of stress due to being on the front lines of the public sector response to the ongoing pandemic.

Democracy’s Front Lines: Civic Education and Local Government- From parents shouting at school board meetings to an overall decline in the belief that democracy is the best form of government, we can all agree that more and better civic education is critically needed. Join Emma Humphries, Chief Education Officer of iCivics, for a conversation on the role that city and county managers can play in preserving and strengthening our institutions.

Combatting Disinformation with Online Relational Intelligence- Social media tools empower governments to quickly inform and mobilize residents in support of community events and initiatives. They are also tools that enable rapid sharing of disinformation across residents that range from the politically motivated designed to manipulate, to the factually inaccurate that need only be coherently corrected. This presentation encompasses the design of policies and practices and digs deeply into derailing disinformation viral messaging that originates from diverse sources, some legitimate and some disingenuous. With a set of interactive scenarios, participants will develop and use a toolkit of technological, relational and communication solutions to combat disinformation, learn how to apply principles of civil discourse that neither disparages residents who are spreading disinformation nor legitimizes viewpoints that are damaging to the community, and create a plan to enable a rapid response team that bridges government and community to promote both correct information and civility across individuals who disagree with each other.
